Utterly pains me. I am aware of it often, thinking of what is happening every moment to the people of Gaza.
Theologically Judaism is in crisis. I would put it this way:
Do we have here a people divinely given a piece of land, exclusively to be theirs? In what way could this be lived out? As a myth or in fundamentalist actuality?
In the later there is a grave danger God can be co-opted into pogroms and ethnic cleansing to make it theirs.
Remember, in the original sacred story as today, there were others already there.
Of all I’d read about this history I’d never come across Lord Montagu’s full statement, which lays it out so well, and so presciently. Thankyou Paul Keeler and Muhammad for hosting
Thank you for sharing your insights, Muhammad. Your article poignantly underscores the intricate ways in which power relations sculpt our comprehension of the world, echoing Foucault's assertion that discourses are saturated with power since they both produce and are products of knowledge. This interplay is vividly manifest in the Palestinian context, where a narrative has been engineered to dehumanize and demonize its people—a narrative starkly disconnected from reality. Yet, the rise of technology has ushered in a new era of transparency. The global audience is now bearing witness to the unfolding events, challenging and questioning the long-held Western narrative, fostering a shift towards a more nuanced understanding.
